MOGADISHU, Somalia — Forces from the Somali National Army and security units from Jubaland carried out a large-scale operation in parts of southern Somalia targeting the extremist group al-Shabab, the government said Wednesday.

The Ministry of Defense of Somalia said the joint operation took place in areas under the districts of Jilib, Xagar, and Afmadow, where troops advanced into villages including Waraha Qalley, Farshabeel, Jigees, Qaawiley, and Weelmaarow.

In a statement, the ministry said the ground offensive was supported by airstrikes conducted with the backing of “international partners,” targeting al-Shabab fighters believed to be operating in the areas.

The government said at least 27 militants were killed during the operation, including individuals it described as key members of the group. It did not provide independent verification of the casualty figures.

The ministry added that troops seized weapons and military supplies, including BKM machine guns, RPG launchers, and AK-47 rifles, as well as explosive materials allegedly intended for attacks against civilians.

Somali authorities said operations against al-Shabab would continue to strengthen security and stability across the Jubba region.

Al-Shabab, which is linked to al-Qaida, frequently carries out attacks in Somalia despite ongoing military offensives by government forces and their allies.
