Somalia: Seven killed in Gedo fighting

GEDO, Somalia-At least seven people from the opposing sides have been reported killed in heavy fighting between Somali government forces aided by African Union troops and Al Shabaab militants in southwestern Gedo region, Garowe Online reports.

The fierce clashes occurred in Surriyo village near Gedo regional district of Buurdhuubo according to residents.

Medical sources have confirmed that 15 others were wounded in the fighting that lasted some hours.

The confrontations erupted after allied forces raided Al Shabaab hideout in the area.

Somali government officials claimed victory over militants, saying they are now in control of Surriyo village.

Al Shabaab has not commented on the casualties on their side, and residents could not be reached for further details on the fatalities from the fighting.

Al Shabaab fighters who fled onslaught elsewhere in Gedo had since been regrouping in Surriyo village.
