Somalia: Somali pirates free seven kidnapped Indian sailors

MOGADISHU, Somalia Oct 30, 2014 (Garowe Online) –Despite decline in piracy activities off Somalia coast, seven kidnapped Indian sailors who have been held captive for four years were released in central Somalia on Tuesday, Garowe Online reports.

Somalia’s central government announced that a plane with the seven Indian sailors on board flew back to Mogadishu from Galgaduud regional capital of Dhuusa Mareeb today.

Local clan elders are said to have played a vital role in freeing the kidnapped Indians.

It is unclear whether the hostages were released on ransom as has been the case but Somalia says they will immediately be flown to their country of birth.

High-seas crimes continue to decrease following coordinated efforts by relevant Somali stakeholders and international partners.

United Arab Emirates Wednesday hosted 4th Counter Piracy conference, stressing that maritime security is of utmost priority at all times for Dubai.
