Somalia: Mortar shells target Ethiopian military base in Somalia

HALGAN, Somalia- Al Shabaab militants group have attacked a military base of Ethiopian soldiers serving with an African Union forces in Halgan district in Hiiran region, on Tuesday, Garowe Online reports.

Local residents told GO at least 8 mortar shells landed in Halgan district near the Ethiopian military base, but so far there is no clear information on the casualties of the attacks.

Al Qaida linked Al Shabaab group has announced its mortar attacks has inflicted damages to the Ethiopian troops stationed there.

Following the mortar attacks, Ethiopian troops were deployed in the town to repulse Al Shabab militants group, according to resident.  

Somalia government and African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) officials didn’t comment on the attacks or the casualties.

In June 2016, about 100 of Al Shabaab fighters were killed following their attempt to raid the Somali government troops and Ethiopian troops base in Halgan.

Al Shabab militants group have carried out sporadic attacks against Somali officials, government forces and AMISOM troops in an efforts to overthrow the government.
