KISMAYO, Somalia- Somali special forces, along with foreign troops thought to be American commando units have launched a joint offensive on Al shabaab camp near Kismayo city, Garowe Online reports.

The raid took place at Al Shabaab controlled Golashombi village, approximately 90 km west of Kismayo, regional capital of Jubba region on Wednesday night, sources said.

The sources told GO that at least 3 Al Shabaab militants have been killed while a training camp and checkpoints were destroyed by Somali-US overnight operation.

The coalition forces encountered a heavy resistance from the Al shabaab fighters, sparking hours-long battle which led to the deaths of three militants, source added.

The attack was the second of its kind on Al shabaab controlled base near Kismayo city, the seaside city in southern Somalia, just 500 km south of Mogadishu.

Neither Somali government officials nor Al Shabaab have commented on the attack.

Al Qaida linked Al Shabaab militants group, has been pushed out of the Somali capital of Mogadishu and most of the main towns it once controlled, but it remains a potent threat to the western backed Somali government.
