Putin calls Congo a “reliable partner” in talks with Sassou-Nguesso in Beijing

BEIJING, Sept 4 – Russian President Vladimir Putin described the Republic of Congo as a “reliable and time-tested partner” during a meeting with President Denis Sassou-Nguesso on Wednesday, as the two leaders held talks on the sidelines of World War II’s 80th anniversary commemorations in Beijing.

“Our work with Congo is one of the priorities of our foreign policy in Africa,” Putin said, adding that the countries meet regularly and maintain strong ties.

The meeting came after a large-scale military parade in China’s capital and reflects Moscow’s ongoing efforts to expand its diplomatic and military footprint across Africa.

In May, Russian Defence Minister Andrey Belousov met his Congolese counterpart, Lt. Gen. Charles Mondjo, to discuss closer military cooperation, which both sides have described as central to their long-standing relationship.
