STOCKHOLM, Sweden - A man known for his Quran-burning in Sweden was shot dead in his Södertälje apartment during a live TikTok stream, police said on Wednesday.

The 38-year-old, who suffered a fatal gunshot wound, was not named by police but was identified by Swedish media as Salvan Momika.

Momika came to public attention in 2023 when he burned copies of the Quran in several Swedish cities, including Malmö, leading to charges of inciting racial hatred.

He was originally from Iraq, where he was raised as a Catholic. Momika had worked as a security guard for the Assyrian Patriotic Party in Mosul during the time when Christians were being persecuted by Islamic State militants in the late 2000s.

After falling out with his group's leadership, Momika left for Germany in 2017 and later moved to Sweden, receiving a temporary residence permit in 2021. He had previously been convicted in Sweden for threatening someone with a knife.

Details about the shooting and any suspects remain undisclosed by the police.
