African Union Urges Somalia to Nominate Delegates for Key AUSSOM Consultations

ADDIS ABABA, July 24 – The African Union Commission has formally urged the Federal Government of Somalia to designate representatives for a series of high-level consultations on the future of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), according to an official letter.

In a letter dated July 20, 2026, addressed to Somalia's Embassy in Addis Ababa and marked "Urgent," the AU Commission invited Somalia to participate in strategic consultative meetings that will begin with technical discussions in Addis Ababa from July 22 to 24, followed by senior-level consultations in Kampala, Uganda, from July 29 to 31.

The consultations will culminate in an Extraordinary Summit of Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) and Police Contributing Countries (PCCs) on July 31, where leaders are expected to endorse recommendations on AUSSOM's future.

According to the letter, the meetings will examine strategic options for AUSSOM, including the mission's operational structure, financial framework, force generation, transition arrangements, and implementation considerations, with a view to submitting recommendations for approval by the AU policy organs.

The AU Commission requested Somalia to nominate its representatives as early as possible to facilitate administrative, protocol and security arrangements. It also said the Commission would cover all costs associated with the participation of Somalia's delegates.

The letter states that the Kampala summit will be preceded by meetings of military chiefs, defence ministers, and other senior officials, with discussions expected to shape the future direction and financing of AUSSOM.
