ADDIS ABABA - The Republic of Kenya has signed a defence cooperation with the Federal Republic of Ethiopia, in a move geared towards stabilisation of security along the shared border in the wake of al-Shabaab attacks within the Northeastern parts of Kenya.

Kenya's Chief of Defence Forces General Charles Kahariri signed the agreement with the Ethiopian National Defence Forces (ENDF) leader Field Marshall Birhanu Jula at the Defence Headquarters in Addis Ababa..

According to reports, the agreement seeks to establish a structured framework for more efficient, effective, and timely collaboration in addressing contemporary security threats. It also focuses on advancing joint training, enhancing interoperability, and strengthening mechanisms for rapid intelligence sharing, KDF said.

Kahariri, a seaman, emphasised the need for deepening defence ties between the two countries, adding that besides defence, the two forces would have common investment in innovation, resilient infrastructure, and industrial capacity.

“This is a clear expression of African self-reliance — mastering our collective fate through cooperation, ingenuity, and shared action,” he said.

On his part, Field Marshal Jula reaffirmed the Ethiopian National Defence Forces’ commitment to the partnership, noting that the agreement reflects the long-standing relationship between the two nations, rooted in shared borders, history, and common challenges. He stated.

"He expressed confidence that the cooperation will not only strengthen peace and security in both countries but also contribute to the stability and prosperity of the wider region," the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) reported.
