Museveni's son warns Ugandan enemies, threatens to crush them

KAMPALA, Uganda - In what could be a strategic succession approach, President Yoweri Museveni's eldest son is increasingly making statements of national interest, two years to presidential elections.

Lieutenant General Kainerugaba Muhoozi on Monday yet again fired warning to Uganda's perceived enemies, arguing that they risk facing wrath from security forces.

In a tweet, the youthful army general said that the Uganda Patriotic Defense Forces will not hesitate to face enemies whenever called for duty. He wasn't making reference to anyone though.

"I can assure whoever even thinks of messing with Uganda will get a very bad day. Long live UPDF! Long live Ugandan Special Forces!" wrote General Kainerugaba.

Last week, Kainerugaba also caused a stir on social media when he claimed that the East Africa nation is 'God chosen' and that nobody can defeat them.

"Ugandan strong! I never used to believe it but Almighty God has made me a believer. Nobody can defeat Uganda! This is God's country," read his tweet.

"Whoever dares will be crushed to dust! Ruhanga asiimwe.Happy Independence Day! God bless Uganda!" he added, posting Ugandan flags.

The 44-year-old is said to be one of the favorites to take over from his father, a former Ugandan Patriotic Defense Forces member who took over power in 1986.

Lt Gen Muhoozi has rapidly risen in ranks within the army, with Museveni promoting him to the current position from Major General on 2019 February.

“The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces has confirmed the promotions of 2,031 UPDF personnel to various ranks,” read the statement by the army early this year.

President Museveni is, however, keen to defend his seat in 2021 polls having prevailed upon Parliament to scrap age limits and terms for presidential candidates.

By then, he could be the oldest serving African president after Obiang Nguema of Equatorial Guinea, who has been around for decades.

He is likely to face his traditional rival Kizza Besigye and youthful Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyangulanyi alias Bobi Wine. The latter is firing shots in early campaigns.
