Puntland Accuses Somalia President of Undermining Constitution, Calls for Inclusive Elections

GAROWE, Somalia, Sept 1 – Somalia’s Puntland State on Sunday accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of violating the country’s constitution and warned that his actions could trigger a political crisis.

In a statement from the presidency, Puntland said Mohamud was misusing constitutional agreements and provisions, and called for immediate national dialogue to agree on a unified roadmap for upcoming elections.

Puntland backed recent calls from the National Salvation Forum — a coalition of opposition figures and regional leaders — urging Mohamud to step aside to allow for inclusive talks on parliamentary and presidential elections.

The statement also said the president’s mandate expires on May 15, 2026, and warned against federal interference in the activities of political groups seeking institutional reform. “Any moves that jeopardize national unity, security, or political stability must be avoided,” the statement read.

Tensions have been rising between the federal government and regional states over election timelines, the distribution of power, and the role of political parties. Puntland has repeatedly called for elections to be held in accordance with Somalia’s provisional constitution.

The Somali presidency did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
