Somalia: Attorney General accuses Lawmakers of treason

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Attorney General of Somalia, Ahmed Ali Dahir has on Sunday blamed two members of the Federal parliament for "treason", and called for the removal of their immunity for prosecution, Garowe Online reports.

The lawmakers, Hassan Moalim Mohamud and Abdisabir Nur Shuriye will be prosecuted for betrayal and be receiving funds from foreign countries oust the depose the current government led by Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire.

He urged the federal law enforcement apprehend the legislators to face the charges against them in the legal court as soon as they are being stripped of the impunity. The Attorney General made the announcement during a press conference at his office in Mogadishu.

"I inform the law enforcement to fulfill their duty and question the MPs over the treason charges and metabolizing an anti-government movement," said Dahir.

Continuing, the Attorney General added that his office tendered a document with evidence to the speaker of the House of People Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari, and demanded the removal of their immunities to face the law.

“No one is above the law, anyone whether he is civilian or lawmaker who commits an act against the regulations of the country will be prosecuted and arraigned in a court," he added.

Meanwhile, MP Shuriye who was elected from Galmudug has rejected the Attorney General's treason charges as 'baseless', accusing Villa Somalia of being behind the decision.

Pundits say the move is aimed to intimidate the parliamentarians critic to the government who were reported to be planning to submit a motion against PM Khaire to the House leadership when the 3rd session opens next February.
