LAS ANOD, Somalia - Calls are growing for an end to a heavy fighting triggered by land disputes and revenge killings between two rival Somali sub-clans that left at least 50 people and injured dozens, Garowe Online reports.

Local elders said the battle flared up Monday, Oct. 22 in a remote village called Dhumay, which lies about 40 kilometers south of Las Anod town after ongoing negotiations to solve the animosity collapsed.

"So far we know that 50 people died in the hostilities between the clans and more than that number were injured and taken to hospitals in the nearby towns," Mohamed Elmi, told Garowe Online by phone.

Elmi, who is resident living Las Anod, Sool regional capital added that the area is still too tense. There might be further clashes as war preparations are underway in nearby villages.

"The renewed battle in Dhumay locality was sparked by long-standing vendetta between the two sub-clans and hostilities over land ownership and pasture," he said.

During Wednesday's session, Somali parliament called on Federal government and regional authorities to put an end to clashes that resulted in the deaths of at least 50 people, including innocent civilians.

The country's top leaders, as well as Puntland and Somaliland, have called for an immediate halt to the escalating conflict and seek a peaceful solution and settlement of disputes led to the bloodshed.

Sool province in northern Somalia has been a contested region between Somaliland and Puntland for nearly two-decade as the two administrations are fighting over control.
