MOGADISHU, Somalia - A loud explosion was heard in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Wednesday morning, wounding at least two people, Garowe Online reports.

A witness said the blast happened at around 9:30 a.m. in the morning, local time when an Improvised Explosive Device [IED] believed to have been attached to a car exploded in Taleh road in the capital.

The driver of the vehicle has sustained critical wounds in the attack and was taken to nearby hospital. Police cordoned off the scene and launched an investigation into the incident, according to the witness.

It was not immediately clear reasons blast the attack and who the attack might have been intended. No group immediately claimed for the responsibility for the car bombing, but, suspicion falls on Al-Shabab.

On Monday, January 9, at least three Somali government soldiers were wounded in a roadside bomb explosion targeted a military vehicle while on security patrol near the old Cigarette and Match Factory in Mogadishu.

Al-Shabab has been able to carry out increasingly deadly bombings despite losing most of its territory to the country's armed forces and the African Union peacekeepers supporting the Somali government.
