Somalia: Germany’s Foreign Minister visits the Somali capital Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Germany’s Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel has arrived to the Somali capital of Mogadishu in unannounced visit to meet top Somali government officials, Garowe Online reports.

Gabriel has landed in the Mogadishu's Aden Adde International Airport on Monday morning, where he received a warm welcome from Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire and his Somali counterpart Yusuf Garad Omar.

Following his arrival, Germany’s Foreign Minister held a closed-door meeting with Khaire and Omar at the Airport, and discussed on a range of issues, including the bilateral relations, according to sources. 

During the meeting with Somali PM, Gabriel said Germany will double its humanitarian assistance for drought relief in Somalia with 70 million Euros and urged other international donors to do the scale-up support.

This is the first visit by top officials from Germany since the collapse of the Somalia's central government back in 1991 due to civil war.
