​Somalia: Top military chief survives bomb attack

MOGADISHU, Somalia - A top Somali army general has survived an apparent assassination attempt after a bomb struck his convoy near Mogadishu on Sunday, Garowe Online reports.

Officials in Garasbaley area, confirmed to GO that the commander of the 3rd Infantry Division of Somali National Army (SNA), Gen Aden Labo Afle, escaped unhurt from a roadside explosion.

The land mine blast has ripped through a military vehicle escorting the Somali army General, wounding several bodyguards, who have been taken to a hospital in Mogadishu to receive medical treatment.

The incident occurred early hours in the morning between Garasbaley and Tareedishe areas, located in the southwestern outskirts of the capital, Mogadishu, according to the officials.

The Al Qaeda-linked militant group Al shabaab has immediately claimed credit for the IED attack aimed to kill the military General through a statement posted on its affiliated websites.

The militants have frequently carried out attacks on Somalia's security forces and have been also locked in battles with the AU troops, to topple the UN-backed government in Mogadishu.
