Six Killed in Clashes in Northeastern Kenya

MANDERA, Kenya - At least six Kenyans have been killed in the northeastern region following the eruption of a clan fight between the Gharre and Degodia communities, in what has ignited tensions in Mandera County, one of the marginalised administrative units in Kenya.

Community tensions between the Gharre and Degodia are common in the country, but there has been relative peace and stability for some time, given improved security and dialogue between the two groups, which make up part of the Somali community.

Ali Roba, the current senator of Mandera who previously served as governor, shared his grief with the mourning communities while calling for calmness. He asked security forces to expedite investigations into the killings.

Senator Roba: "We urge all residents to remain calm and united during this difficult time. We share in your grief and stand with you, committed to carrying this burden together as we work toward lasting peace and justice."

"Let us move forward and not dwell on the actions of the wrongdoers. The deceased will find their reward in paradise, as promised by Allah. Allah will also grant fortitude to the bereaved families to bear the painful loss. We are united as Muslims, bound together as brothers and sisters. let us avoid more bloodshed and retaliation," added Osama Abdille.

Leaders continued calling for calm following the death of six people killed in an attack on the Muruthow location in Malkamari Division of Banisa constituency, Mandera County. Some residents accused leaders of complacency.

"To our leaders who only show up when we have a problem and not any other time, we welcome you regardless," said Ugas Mohamed, one of the respected elders in Banisa constituency. The constituency does not have a parliament member after Kulow Maalim's death in 2023.

In northeastern Kenya, clan conflicts are synonymous with the locals, given constant fights over leadership and even boundaries. The government has deployed more security officials to the affected region to help calm the situation.
